How to navigate MOQ requirements as an Indie Brand

Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) is the biggest hurdle for emerging beauty brands. Here is how you can secure premium, customized packaging without over-leveraging your startup capital.

Navigating MOQ Requirements

The Truth About Factory MOQs

Manufacturers don't enforce MOQs to be difficult; they do it because setting up injection molding machines, cleaning color vats, and calibrating silk-screen printers takes time and material waste. Running 500 units costs the factory almost the same in setup overhead as running 10,000 units.

Generally, a standard, fully customized (color-injected) plastic bottle requires an MOQ of 10,000 units. Custom glass often requires 20,000 to 30,000 units depending on the furnace run.

Strategy 1: Standard Stock, Premium Decoration

The most effective strategy for an indie brand is to select an "In-Stock" base component (usually clear, white, or black) and invest heavily in the surface decoration. Standard stock items often have an MOQ as low as 1,000 to 5,000 units. By utilizing full-wrap silk screening, matte frosting, or metallic hot stamping, you can transform a generic bottle into a completely bespoke brand asset.

Strategy 2: Component Sharing

If you are launching a full skincare line (e.g., cleanser, toner, moisturizer), try to standardize the neck size and bottle diameter across the range. You can purchase 10,000 identical unprinted bottles to hit the MOQ, and then split the silk-screen printing into three different batches for the different SKUs.
